Myth ‘Extra fluid intake to treat functional constipation’

To recommend increasing fluid intake when children suffer from constipation is not uncommon. But does an increased oral fluid intake support the treatment of functional constipation?
The fact is: There is currently no scientific evidence that increased oral fluid intake effectively treats constipation.
Professional societies discuss various dietary strategies for managing functional constipation. While adequate hydration is undoubtedly important, studies so far show no clear benefit from additional fluid intake beyond normal levels.
It is advisable to monitor and adjust dietary and drinking habits as part of a comprehensive approach. However, increasing oral fluid intake is not recommended as a standalone treatment for functional constipation.
