Safety and benefits of milk formula with GOS + L. fermentum

02.2012

The two double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled studies GOLF 1 & GOLF 2 (GO= GOS, LF= L. fermentum) investigated the safety and effects of infant formula with pre- and probiotics. Children with a pre- and probiotic (synbiotic) infant formula were compared with children from the control group that received formula with only prebiotics (GOS)1.

Result: The combined administration of natural lactic acid culture L. fermentum and GOS (Galacto-Oligosaccharide) in infant (GOLF 2 Study) as well as in follow-on formula (GOLF 1) proved safe and well-tolerated.

Additionally, in both studies, the administration of a pre- und probiotic formula clearly lowered the incidence of gastrointestinal infections: Over a six-month period, there were 71% 2 fewer cases of diarrhea with the infant formula and 46% 1 fewer with the follow-on formula than in the comparison group.

Fig. 1: Study with Infant formula (GOLF 2)2: Incidence of infection in relation to infant formula administered

Additionally, respiratory infections were reduced by 26% in children with the synbiotic follow-on formula (see Fig. 2).

Fig. 2: Study with Follow-on formula (GOLF 1)1 : Incidence of infection in relation to administered follow-on formula

  • Significantly fewer infections with follow-on formula with L. fermentum + GOS vs. only prebiotics (GOS)
  • The studies meet the ESPGHAN‘s3 requirements that the safety and effects of pre- und probiotic infant formula be demonstrated.

HiPP offers infant formula with both of these components as HiPP COMBIOTIC®.
